My studio, my creative space, my cave
After months of hard work, and the support of some wonderful friends and family, I’m thrilled to finally share that my ceramic studio is officially complete! It’s a small, cozy space with a big heart, designed as an extension of my home but separate in the garden —a place where my creatures (my ceramics, of course!) can come to life. I’m so excited to have a space where I can create, teach, and—most importantly—be immersed in art.
Open to the garden
One of the things I cherish most about the studio is the natural light. With big windows that let in the morning sun, the entire space feels open, warm, and alive. Light plays such an important role in any environment, and I’m so happy to see how the sunlight dances over my pieces as they dry or wait for their first firing.
The idea was to create an atmosphere that was both functional and cozy, where I could escape into my work and let my ideas flow. The location of the studio is ideal also, its in the garden, few meters from home. Enough close to hear my children shouting, but enough far that i can pretend not to. :)
Function Meets Comfort
Of course, when it comes to a ceramic studio, function is key. I was determined to make sure everything had its place, so I invested time into planning out the studio's layout. (Yes I have the Pinterest page.) The centerpiece of the space is the table where people can sit down and work comfortably. I found this table second hand, and it is just the perfect size. I was very happy for it.
The beating heart of any ceramic studio is without a doubt, the kiln. It’s a little nerve-wracking to think about the first firing, but I hope that it will work beautifully. I’ll be testing it soon, and I can’t wait to see how my pieces will come to life inside. I have a lot of work to do until I find my way with glazes. But now I have enough place to be organised and work thourgh tests and try out different colours, temperatures and textures. The studio is well organised, and there’s a good flow to the space, with drying racks positioned perfectly for both convenience and organization. Place to take photos about the finished sculptures. There is a sink, and a dedicated place to handle, and reuse the clay. Everything has its place.
The Importance of a Well-Organized Space
Over the years, I’ve worked in many different spaces—often small, cluttered, and less-than-ideal. Whether it was cramped corners, chaotic workbenches, or working right next to the washing machine. One time I made a sculpture in resin in the bathroom/toilet of an airbnb, while my baby sleept in the next room. When you want/need to work, you do it anyway.
But how you work matters. Working in disarray can make a simple task feel overwhelming and can even affect the way you approach your art. When a space is cluttered, it can become mentally draining. But when everything has its place and is easy to access, it frees you up to focus on the important stuff—your creative vision. A clean, well-organized environment is vital, especially for something as tactile and delicate as sculpture. It allows me to work with intention and focus, without unnecessary distractions.
Having a dedicated space where I can keep everything from my tools to my clay organized is a game-changer. Not only does it improve the quality of my sculptures, but it also prevents physical strain.
Looking Forward: Teaching and Creating
As much as this studio is a place for my own creative process, I’m also excited to share it with others. Soon, I’ll be offering teaching sessions, where I can help others explore the wonderful world of sculpting. Stay tuned for more details on those upcoming classes.
The Journey Continues
Even though the studio is “finished,” I know there is a lot to do more, in terms of organasing and impoving the space. No living space is ever finished. I’m looking forward to testing my kiln, working on new projects, and sharing this creative journey with all of you. For now, though, I’m just enjoying the fact that my studio is ready—my creatures are ready to live here, and I’m ready to start creating in this beautiful space.
Thank you again to everyone who helped make this dream a reality. I couldn’t have done it without you, and I’m excited for what’s to come!
